Michael Getman
Born in Israel to Jewish/Russian parents Dora Karolin & Zaxharia Getman.
He received his professional training at the Bat-Dor School of dance.
After graduating he started his journey as a professional dancer and performer.
Between the years 1995 to 2005 Michael worked as a professional dancer and was lucky to experiment and experience with a variety of creative styles and work methods, interpreting works by choreographers such as Ohad Naharin, Amanda k Miller, Marguerite Donlon, William Forsythe, Shintaro Oue, Michael Schumacher, Örjan Andersson, Regina Van Berkel.
At the age 17 Michael joined the young Bat Sheva Ensemble Company, directed By Naomie Perlov.
After a year at the Junior company he was invited by the artistic director, Ohad Naharin, to join the Bat Sheva Dance Company.
In 1999 Michael Joined The Ballet Freiburg - Pretty Ugly Dance Company, Directed by Amanda K Miller.
Between 2002-2003 Michael was dancing at the Stats Theatre Saarbrucken, Artistic Director Marguerite Donlon, before joining the last season of Ballet Freiburg Pretty Ugly 2004.
His first Choreographic project, a site specific project, was an artistic collaboration with artists from the field of dance, music/sound, and theatre; facilitating an old cotton factory in Saarbrucken, Germany 2003.
Since 2006 Getman is based in Israel and working in the field of Choreography, Theatre and Performance.
He examines and interested in everything from the corporeal body to conceptual thought, movement, technique, freedom, imagination, sound, voice, different forms of expression, different patterns of thought, behavioural representations in various cultural contexts.
Michael has been creating throughout the years numerous projects and choreographic works, he is commissioned as a choreographer to create for companies, museums, galleries and theatres; utilizing a various forms of choreography.
His works are presented in various festivals and venues, such as the International Exposure at the Suzanne Dellal Centre, Tel Aviv, The Israel museum, Jerusalem, White Box Art Gallery, New York City, Royal Danish Theatre, Copenhagen, Holland Dance Festival, Operaestate Festival Venato, Bassano Del Grappa, Open Look Festival, St.Petersburg, Deutsche Schauspielhaus, Hamburg, Theatre National De Chaillot, Paris, Graz Opera house, Austria, Die Tonne Theatre, Germany, Dance Springboard Montreal, La Rival Theatre, Stockholm, among others.
He was consecutively invited by the Cellist and the Artistic Director Zvika Plesser to create a Choreographic score on Schubert’s Quartet The Death and The Maiden, and Stravinsky’s L’histoire du Soldat, premiered at the opening night of the ‘Voice of Music - Upper Galilee Chamber Music Festival’ . (2015,2016)
In 2015 Michael was assisting the Theatre and Circus Director - Evgeni Mestetschkin with staging and directing the theatre production Out of Mea Shearim, A joint Israeli-German production with ex ultra Orthodox from Jerusalem. Premiered at the Schauspielhaus Hamburg.
In 2016 Michael collaborated with the theatre director, Igor Berezin, Staging and Choreographing the play Bucha (Yosef Bar Yosef) for the Jerusalem Kahn Theatre.
Michael received a scholarship from the American Israel Cultural Foundation for promising young Choreographers 2006.
He has been awarded choreographic prizes in two intentional competitions:
International Choreography Contest Cross Connection Ballet, Copenhagen 2008.
The No Ballet International Choreographic Contest, Ludwigshafen Germany 2014.
Getman teaches and holds workshops based on research and improvisation for professional and amateurs and for Bachelor and Master programs in different Universities and Art school programs.
Michael continues his artistic search and choreographic exploration by meeting with the “Daily Reality” and by collaborating with various artists from the field of Theatre, Dance, Music, Literature and Visual Arts.
